Immigrants – Invisible Engines of Innovation

Today, discussions are ongoing about how immigration affects the U.S. economy. By examining the numbers and facts, we see that this impact is positive, especially regarding innovation. Without immigrants, the development of this sector would have progressed much more slowly.

A Bit of History 

Researchers from Harvard and Exeter universities, as well as George Mason University, conducted a study aimed at identifying the role of immigrants in the development of the American economy. They examined data from 1850 to 1940. 

For nearly a century, the trend remained unchanged: where there are many immigrants, there are always many innovations. This rule has no exceptions. As is known, an abundance of innovations leads directly to economic growth.

Facts and Figures 

It has been established that the influx of immigrants to the U.S. in 1965 likely contributed not only to the growth of innovations but also, as a consequence, to a 5% increase in local wages. Surprised? There are even more impressive figures. 

Immigrants are the founders of 55% of all startups in the U.S. valued at over $1 billion. Impressive, right? It should be noted that in about 42% of these cases, a U.S.-born individual was a co-founder of the company. However, in the remaining 58% of cases, the founders were exclusively immigrants. 

The picture is further enhanced by the following detail: 64% of the largest American companies were created by immigrants or their children. Stuart Anderson in Forbes notes that the combined value of over 300 companies founded in the U.S. by immigrants amounts to $1.2 trillion. This dizzying figure is far from being matched by companies from many other countries, even large ones like Russia or Mexico…
